California Man Sentenced to Serve 295 Months in
Prison in Child Pornography Case
August 23, 2010WASHINGTON—David Grummer, 44, of San Diego, was sentenced late Friday to 295 months in prison following his conviction on 18 counts of receipt of child pornography and five counts of possession of child pornography, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Laura E. Duffy for the Southern District of California.
Grummer was convicted by a federal jury in San Diego on June 24, 2010. Grummer is also required to register as a sex offender and to serve 15 years of supervised release following his prison term.
Grummer has been detained since his arrest on Dec. 5, 2008.
The case originated from a joint investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Criminal Enforcement and the FBI into the illegal sale of chlordane and DDT on the Internet.
According to court documents and three days of trial testimony, Grummer, who was employed at a hazardous waste recycling facility, was selling banned chemicals on the Internet.
Following an EPA, Office of Criminal Enforcement and FBI search of his residence in Oceanside, Calif., forensic examiners discovered child pornography on one of the computer hard drives seized.
According to evidence at trial and court documents, the FBI Cyber Squad then conducted an investigation that led to a second search of the residence and the discovery of hundreds of images of child pornography on five separate hard drives.
Additional forensic analysis revealed Grummer utilized file share programs to search for and download images depicting the sexual exploitation of children.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.
Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alessandra P. Serano and Matthew J. Gardner for the Southern District of California and Trial Attorney LisaMarie Freitas of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS).

Helicopter Rescue of Hikers Near El Monte Fire
8-21-10 Sheriff's helicopter crew, ASTREA 1, with a flight crew of Deputy S. Bligh (pilot) and Deputy G. Kneeshaw (tactical flight officer), performed a rescue of two experienced hikers, a man and a woman, who were in danger of being overtaken by rapidly advancing flames on the El Monte Fire in Lakeside.
Both Sheriff's Fire-Rescue helicopters had already been fighting the fire with all other available county air assets. At the time of origin, the hikers believed they were an adequate distance from the fire and elected to "shelter in place." Later, the hikers made a 911 call to the Sheriff's Communication Center to advise they were now threatened by the flames and asked for assistance.
Sheriff's Copter 10 (fire fighting helicopter) was in the area of the hikers but the smoke was obscuring visibility and it was unclear whether or not the hikers could be reached. ASTREA 1 arrived in the area and with the assistance of Copter 10, located the hikers within about 50 yards of the flames.
Deputy Bligh performed a "toe in" landing on the hillside and the female hiker was loaded into the helicopter and flown to the valley floor. Deputy Kneeshaw (the TFO) remained behind on the hillside with the male hiker. The flames quickly moved upslope and forced Deputy Kneeshaw and the male hiker to flee westbound along the rugged hillside.
Deputy Bligh returned to the area and performed a second "toe in" landing against the hillside. With the 20 foot flames within a few feet of the helicopter's tail rotor, Deputy Kneeshaw loaded the male hiker into the front seat and signaled for Deputy Bligh to depart.
Deputy Kneeshaw was forced to stand on the skid and hold onto the side of the helicopter as Deputy Bligh flew them to the valley floor and safety. Both hikers were reunited and no one sustained any injuries.

Mouse Tests Positive For Hantavirus
At Campground
08-16-10 San Diego Ca, San Diego County Urges Campers to Use Caution When Cleaning Up Rodent Droppings. A wild brush mouse trapped in Fry Creek Campground on Mt. Palomar tested positive for the potentially-deadly hantavirus during routine monitoring, San Diego County Vector Control officials said Monday. Nineteen mice have tested positive for Hantavirus this year.
“Campers need to make sure that mice stay out of their tents, campers and motor homes” said Jack Miller, Director of the County Department of Environmental Health. “People contract hantavirus by inhaling the virus, often when they are cleaning up rodent droppings and nesting materials. Wet cleaning methods should be used to prevent inhaling the virus.”
Vector Control randomly samples wild mice to determine the extent of the virus. Hantavirus is carried by wild rodents, primarily deer mice.
The virus is found in rodent droppings and urine and can be inhaled by humans when it becomes airborne. The airborne virus can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), which can begin with symptoms similar to the flu, but in rare cases, can lead to severe breathing difficulties and even death. There is no vaccine or specific treatment for hantavirus.
Several precautions should be taken to avoid exposure:
Eliminate rodent infestations immediately.
Avoid rodent infested areas and do not stir up dust or materials that may be contaminated with rodent droppings and urine.
Clean up rodent droppings and urine using the wet cleaning method described below.
Do Not Sweep Or Vacuum Infested Areas. Instead, Use Wet Cleaning Methods
Ventilate affected area by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes.
Use rubber gloves. Spray a 10 percent bleach solution (2 tablespoons bleach to 1 cup of water) onto dead rodents, rodent droppings, nests, contaminated traps, and surrounding areas and let the disinfectant stand for at least 15 minutes before cleaning. Clean with a sponge or a mop.
Place disinfected rodents and debris into two plastic bags, seal them and discard in the trash.
Wash gloves in a bleach solution, then soap and water, and dispose of them using the same double-bag method. Thoroughly wash your bare hands with soap and water.
For more information, contact the County Department of Environmental Health at (858) 694-2888 or visit http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/deh/pests/hantavirus.html.

Wright County Egg Conducts Nationwide
Voluntary Recalls of Eggs
August 13, 2010 - The following statement was released by officials of Wright County Egg regarding the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) on-farm records review and egg testing for Salmonella.
Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa is voluntarily recalling specific Julian dates of shell eggs produced by their farms because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Salmonellais an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditic or arthritis.
Eggs affected by this recall were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and foodservice companies in California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. These companies distribute nationwide.
Eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.
Eggs are packed in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons) with Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225 and plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946. Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton.
The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1946 223.
There have been confirmed Salmonella entertainsillnesses relating to the shell eggs and traceback investigations are ongoing.
Wright County Egg is fully cooperating with FDA’s investigation by undertaking this voluntary recall. Our primary concern is keeping Salmonella out of the food supply and away from consumers.
As a precautionary measure, Wright County Egg also has decided to divert its existing inventory of shell eggs to a breaker, where they will be pasteurized to kill any Salmonella bacteria present.
Consumers who believe they may have purchased these shell eggs should not eat them but should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. This recall is of shell eggs only.
Other egg products produced by Wright County Eggs are not affected. Consumers with questions should visit www.eggsafety.org
Our farm strives to provide our customers with safe, high-quality eggs – that is our responsibility and our commitment.

Norton, who took command of Ronald Reagan in May of 2008, led the ship through two deployments to the 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility. He also led the ship through the recently completed Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2010 exercise.
- Norton was recently selected for promotion to rear admiral and will be reporting to Commander, Naval Air Forces to await further assignment.
“This has been, without a doubt, the defining tour of my naval career up to this point. It has been a thrill beyond imagination. And you know already you’ve got 3,000 of America’s finest Sailors standing with you, standing alongside behind you, standing beside you…and they will serve you well.”

Burke told the crew he will always try to give the crew the tools they need to succeed but in return demanded integrity, persistence, professional competence and honor.
“I do not expect perfection from any of you, but I do demand your best effort at every task,” Burke said. “We must be model Sailors who do our country credit, whether we be on the far side of the world, or right here at home”
Ronald Reagan was commissioned in July 2003, making it the ninth nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The ship is named for the 40th U.S. president. The ship’s motto, "Peace through Strength," was a recurring theme during the Reagan presidency.
