FLU VACCINE RECOMMENDED FOR EVERYONE
Seasonal Flu Vaccine Also Protects Against H1N1

This flu season, age and health status won’t matter as the vaccine will be available to everyone 6 months and older. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) and its many partners today announced that the flu vaccine is now available throughout the region.

As it does every year, seasonal flu vaccine offers protection against three flu viruses that are expected to be around this winter.

A change this flu season is that people 9 years and older will only need one type of flu shot because the H1N1 vaccine is now part of the seasonal flu vaccine. However, two doses are still recommended for children 6 months to 8 years and they are to be administered four weeks apart.

“It is extremely important for people to get vaccinated and to practice good hand washing hygiene,” said Supervisor Ron Roberts at a vaccination clinic organized by the San Diego Black Nurses Association, the San Diego Immunization Coalition, and HHSA. “I encourage everyone in San Diego County to get their flu shot,” added Roberts, who got vaccinated along with hundreds of residents.

This year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending that people 6 months and older get vaccinated. The vaccine is especially recommended for people at higher risk of developing complications from the flu: pregnant women, children under 5, people 50 and older, those with chronic medical conditions and people in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.

According to the CDC, more than 160 million flu doses will be available across the country. This is a 40 percent increase compared to previous years in anticipation of higher demand from the public.

The vaccine comes in injectable and nasal forms; however, the nasal spray is only recommended for healthy individuals between 2 and 49 years of age.

Locally, people can get the flu vaccine at their doctor’s office or retail pharmacies. People with no insurance or medical provider can get the flu vaccine at the County’s seven public health vaccination clinics. The nearest location can be found at www.sdiz.org or by calling 2-1-1.

Last flu season, because of the H1N1 influenza pandemic, there were more flu-related deaths in the County than any previous year; 57 H1N1-related deaths since the novel H1N1 virus was discovered in April 2009. Furthermore, more than 900 people had to be hospitalized due to complications from H1N1.

“These deaths and hospitalizations can be prevented,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H, County Public Health Officer. “Getting vaccinated is the single most important action people can take to protect themselves from the flu.”

Here’s a brief overview of the other classes participating in San Diego Bayfair:

Grand Prix—Featuring supercharged big-block engines, Grand Prix boats are a smaller version of an Unlimited hydroplane. The boats run up to 160 mph in straightaways. Competitors from the West Coast and Canada will be making their way to San Diego to run the 26-foot hydroplanes.

Offshore Boats—As many as 12 V-bottoms and catamarans will converge on Mission Bay for the third stop of the Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Association (POPRA). Many of the piston-powered boats run speeds that top 100 mph in the straightaway’s.

PWC—Some of the biggest names in PWC racing including Craig Warner and Chris Macclugage will take over Crown Point for some closed course competition. More than 100 racers will compete in 15 classes as a warm-up for World Championships in October.

Stock Outboards—As the name implies, these boats used outboard engines that have not been modified. Racers kneel in the boats that weigh a mere 125 pounds. The slightest wake or driver movement can affect the balance of the boat that top speeds of 60 mph.

SST-45 Tunnel Boats—The smaller cousin to the Formula 1 tunnel boats, many of the sport’s stars started in the SST-45 ranks. Boats can accelerate to top speed in just a few seconds and because they can turn so sharply, they are an instant favorite with boat racing fans.

Cracker Boxes—The oldest inboard class in the APBA, Cracker Boxes feature the engine in front of the driver and observer. The flat-bottom runabouts have the exact same bottom design as the boats when they made their debut in the 1930s. These boats can run speeds up to 100 mph.

Classic Outboard Runabouts—With a modified V-bottom, these boats will post speeds of 80 mph on the course. Powered by a V-6, 150-horsepower outboard, the Outboard Runabouts have a loyal following in San Diego.

“All of these classes are great fun to watch in person,” said promoter Ross Wallach, who will oversee the various classes for San Diego Bayfair. “You have amateurs’ drivers competing against veteran racers, which can make for great racing.” The Drag Boat ‘s compete in front of Crown Point Shores in front of thousands of motorsports fans!

Guard Rescue 9 From Sinking Boat

SEPTEMBER 11, 2010, SAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard received a call for help from a vessel with nine people on board that was taking on water about 30 miles south of Point Loma, Calif., Saturday evening.

The Joint Harbor Operations Center (JHOC) in San Diego received a distress call at 4:45 p.m., from the 48-foot fishing boat Instinct stating they were taking on water from the engine room and could not control the rate the water was leaking.

Coast Guard Sector San Diego launched a MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Edisto to the Instinct’s location. All nine people aboard the boat put on their lifevests and prepared to abandon the Instinct by launching the lifeboat.

Before the Coast Guard could arrive on scene the good Samaritan boat Miss My Money arrived on scene and tried to help the Instinct pump the water off.

Another good Samaritan boat, Dr. Sic, arrived on scene just after 5 p.m., and took all nine people from the sinking Instinct on board. A third good Samaritan boat, Tin Man, also arrived on scene to help.

The rescue helicopter arrived on scene at 5:23 p.m., and supervised the transfer of all of the survivors to the Dr. Sic and the Tin Man.

At 5:45 p.m., the crew of Dr. Sic began transporting six of the survivors from the Instinct to Point Loma Marina. Three people were transferred to the Tin Man that stayed on scene until further help arrived.

The Coast Guard Cutter Edisto arrived on scene at 5:53 p.m., and brought two of the remaining three survivors from the Tin Man on board, while the third was transferred to a commercial savage company’s boat. The salvage company boat then took the Instinct into tow and transported it to a local marina.

The Coast Guard would like to remind all mariners to have the proper communication and life saving equipment on board in case of an emergency such the one that happened this evening.
